When Westerners think of a night out in China, they often think of a bunch of young Chinese people heading out to a karaoke bar to sing pop songs in poor English. Of course, these are the same Westerners who think China is the place where Sumo wrestlers learn kung-fu to play Starcraft and ride elephants. (For those that don’t get it, Westerners get confused and put things from Japan (Sumo), Korea (Starcraft) and Thailand (elephants) in China.) Karaoke was actually invented in Japan and is even a Japanese word, meaning “super ultra fun-time empty orchestra.”
And yet, even the dumber Westerners are correct in the knowledge that karaoke is very popular in China. I’m pretty sure it is more popular than heading out to a movie and maybe even more so than going to a plain bar. But one thing neither side knows is they approach Karaoke in completely different ways.
In China, karaoke is some serious business. Almost all Chinese have a handful of songs that are “their” songs and that have been practiced before heading out with the group. Songs are strategically chosen to be both very common and in their voice range. Maybe they think there is some sort of prize at the end, or that bad singing will get them mocked by all their friends? Actually, yes, there is definitely a chance of mocking. Oh, and most of the songs are in Chinese, for what I hope are obvious reasons.
Additionally, the crowd is different in China. Almost all karaoke is done in small rooms, so you always are in front of friends and never have to worry about a drunken stranger yelling “you suck” during your song. However, likely because the singer sings this song every single time they go out, most friends don’t pay much attention to the singer and either talk with each other or play dice games. Either that or all the Chinese people I know have very bad friends.
In the US, karaoke is radically different. First, the most common place to see it is in a bar. A real bar, where the night before the main entertainment was drinking and the day after karaoke the main entertainment will be drinking and trying to hook-up with drunken people. The karaoke machine is usually set up in front of the audience, with people needing to sign up in order to get on the stage. This leads to a much bigger chance of hilarious embarrassment, with scattered drops of surprising talent.
Even if the karaoke is in a private room, it is still different. This is because in the US, crowd participation is as deeply rooted in our culture and is encouraged by are equally deep need to gain attention by acting foolish. A good karaoke song, by US standards, is one with a catchy chorus that everybody can loudly follow along with. Jumping beside your friend to aid them in singing a particularly power section is encouraged. However, trying steal the microphone because you’re sure you have a better singing voice is still considered rude.
